Background on "Motherhood: Nurturing the Work of Heart"When I was a new mother and my kids were still very young, I found a
newsletter that was a source of support and encouragement to me. It
came once a month and was full of articles written by parents about the
challenges and rewards of being home with your children. It was
the only place where I could find other moms who, like me, were making
spending time with their children a priority over spending time on career and income.

Home". Unfortunately, the organization (FamilyandHomeNetwork.org)
stopped publishing the newsletter, but they created a workbook full of
discussion materials which I now use in my workshop.
What is "Motherhood: Nurturing the Work of Heart"?When
I got ready to go back to my work as a psychotherapist, I wanted to
focus on helping mothers. I had always had the Family and Home Network
discussion materials in the back of my mind as a way to help moms like
I had been helped. There are many different support groups for moms in
Santa Cruz but I don't think any of them actually takes the job of
being a mother and analyzes it. This workshop is a support group but
also shows a mother exactly what her job is and how to care for herself
and bring her own interests and talents into the job. By the end of
the 6 weeks, a mother will be able to write a job description for her
work at home. She will also be clear about her priorities, values and
interests and how to include these in her daily activities.

Babies and Toddlers are Welcome?When
I was a mother of young children, I wouldn't have taken a class that
didn't also allow my children. In fact I didn't go away from home much
on a regular basis until my youngest was 5. Maybe once a year, I'd get
away by myself to renew and rejuvenate if my husband could be with my
children. I couldn't see offering a workshop for mothers without also
allowing them to bring along the children who are not in preschool
yet. So I made sure to get a large space that we meet in that has a
doorway leading into a smaller room with toys and a kid's table. Moms
who bring kids keep an eye out for them and an ear to the discussion.
There are interruptions, but we make it work. I have a friend who does
the childcare who watches over the kids in the other room. If you use
the childcare, you'll have to expect to be interrupted occasionally
anyway if your child is under 4 years old. There's a small extra
charge if you bring your child and use the childcare.

Is it Just For Stay at Home Moms? This
workshop is for mothers who want to feel better about themselves in
their job at home. We do make a case for children's needs and quote
doctors who recommend that children are best served being cared for at
home by a parent for the first 2 years of life, if that's at all
possible for the family. Still, the mothers in this workshop come from
various walks of life and all have one thing in common: they want to
spend generous amounts of time with their kids. Sometimes this means
sequencing work and motherhood so that, like me, they go back to their
careers once the children are in school. Other times it means working
on weekends or evenings, tag-teaming with their husbands, working at
home or working part time. No matter whether we are working part-time
or full-time, it's useful to take a look at the job of being a mother,
what it entails and how we can serve ourselves and our families
better.
What's In The Workbook?The
workbook contains over 40 articles written by parents that were printed
in the newsletter, "Welcome Home", now out of print but originally
published by the organization Family and Home Network. The workbook is
divided into 6 sections that correspond to the 6 sessions of the
workshop. Each section covers a topic which is discussed in the
workshop. There are writing exercises and journaling assignments as
well as reading assignments and an appendix full of resources for your
work at home.
What Are The Session Topics?Session I Exploring Expectations and Transitions
Session II Identifying Feelings and Cultural Influences and the Needs of Children
Session III Clarifying Values; Thinking About Family Finances; Defining Your Job
Session IV Honoring Your Interests & Talents; Reflecting on Your Marriage and Mutual Interests
Session V Developing an Interdependent Community
Session VI Appreciating Your New Identity; Making Time for Marriage and for Personal Renewal
What is the Online Workshop?It
seemed like there was a need for some mothers to stay home and still be
able to participate in this workshop. Also, there are so many mothers
who come to my website from all over the country that can't take a
workshop that's only taught in Santa Cruz. So it became apparent to me
that I needed to offer this workshop "online" which for now means
through a conference call. This is where mothers can meet from all
over the country through a phone once a week for 6 weeks. As
technology evolves, so could this workshop. Maybe one day we'll all
have video cams on our computers and meet that way. For now though, we
do it through the phone. It's a convenient way to take a class at home
while your child is happy at home being watched by someone else or
otherwise occupied.
